Tae Kwon Do Event - In Memory of Poppy and Amalie

On 25 November 2007, Kelly Caple, Rob Robinson, Samantha Walker, Simon Marshall, Georgina Boucher, Jemma Davies, Nadya Mounsor, Jenni Theedam, Charlotte Lee and Sarah Dee from Gloucester Severn Tae Kwon Do club took part in a sponsored “pattern-a-thon” at Hucclecote Community Centre.

The aim was for each person to complete 120 patterns in two hours.  The number of pattern repetitions would vary, for example a 2nd Dan knows 15 patterns, so would repeat each of those 15 patterns 8 times in order to do 120. A blue belt, however, knows 6 patterns so they would need to repeat those 6 patterns 20 times in order to complete the challenge.

Everybody successfully completed the challenge and £1,000 has been raised.

Stroud Half Marathon - In Memory of Poppy and Amalie

“I am due to run (and hopefully finish) the Stroud 1/2 marathon on October 21st 2007.  This is my first ever attempt at any serious running and I am slightly worried about finishing it having had a look at the likely course.  However, I am doing the run for a very good reason, so I will turn up on the day and I will finish (hopefully in under 2 hours).

I am running in memory of my twin daughters Poppy and Amalie who were born extremely prematurely on the 19th March this year and who both unfortunately did not survive.  The charity I am collecting for is Scoo-B-Doo which is for the Special Babycare unit at Gloucester Hospital where Amalie spent 8 days.  I know that the staff at the unit did everything they could to help and support Jo and myself at the time and so I would like to give something back to help others in the future who have go to through similar experiences”.

Simon did run and finish the marathon (his time was 1 hour 41 minutes) and he raised £2,246.  Well done Simon!

Sponsored EBM (Expressed Breast Milk) Donation - In Memory of Poppy and Amalie

Our local Milk bank, situated in the Birmingham Women’s Hospital, was recently featured on the news asking for new Breast Milk Donators, as their stock was running low.

Breast milk increases a premature baby’s chance of survival and helps their long-term development. Milk donations are required as sometimes their mothers cannot feed them because they are sick or under too much stress to produce enough milk. My friends Si and Jo gave birth to two premature baby daughters, Poppy and Amalie, who sadly passed away. Amazingly, with all of the stress they were under with Poppy having already passed away, Jo did a fantastic job of expressing milk for Amalie. I know how hard breast feeding can be to start with, so I’m so proud of how well she did. Jo wanted to donate the breast milk which wasn’t used to help increase other babies’ chances of survival, but unfortunately she was unable to, due to having had a blood transfusion in the past.

Poppy and Amalie’s deaths are so sad, and I wanted to do something to help Si and Jo with their fund raising efforts in raising money for Scoo-B-Doo.

I decided to do a sponsored breast milk donation as I was breast feeding my son and thought that I could express extra milk for the milk bank and also raise money for this excellent cause.

I donated 120 ounces of breast milk to the milk bank. This amount of milk was the equivalent of feeding a premature baby for approximately 6 months, as 1 ounce of milk feeds a tiny premature baby for 1 ½ days. I donated this milk between June and September 2007.

The Milk Bank sent me sterile bottles to store and freeze the milk in before they came to collect it, they then processed the milk by defrosting it, pasteurising it and sending it to local hospitals to be given to premature babies.

I raised over £550.00 – (final total to be confirmed), but a huge thank you to everyone who sponsored me.

With thanks, Katherine Thompson

24 Hour 3 Peaks Challenge - In Memory of Poppy and Amalie

On 14 July 2007, Matthew Carter, Louise Dunn, Melanie Garlick, Adam Sprague and Charles Turner (from the Gloucester office of PricewaterhouseCoopers) successfully completed the 3 Peaks Challenge.

They chose Scoo-B-Doo in memory of their colleague’s premature twin babies, Poppy and Amalie, who died in March 2007.

The challenge itself was fairly eventful!  It was snowing at the top of Snowdon and wet and slippery on Scafell.  The team got lost on the way down Scafell Pike at 11.30 at night and somebody asked for directions whilst holding the map upside down!  The weather on the Sunday dawn was beautiful with fantastic views.  One of the guys got locked out of their vehicle wearing just a pair of leggings!

The team did a great job and raised £1,176 - well done guys!

Along with husband Phil, sister Beccy and dad Phill, Sam King will be running a half marathon with all funds raised going to SCOO-B-DOO.Here’s what Sam has to say…“Our beautiful Daughter Ellie May King was born sleeping on 24th October 2006 after a very swift induction and delivery. Ellie had died on the Monday and we were booked in to be induced on the Tuesday after a very troubled pregnancy. She was perfect to us but unfortunately did not take her first breath. Phil and I and my family felt we needed to give something back to Gloucester Royal who were amazing in our journey through the pregnancy and out the other side, with support from our Consultant Dr Elaine Smith a marvellous lady, the Midwifes especially Sheila Wriggly and our bereavement midwife Viv who has helped us so much through this uncharted and painful territory for which we are still feeling our way. Our heartmost thanks to them all. “The half marathon, organised by the Gloucester Athletics Society will leave from the Newent Community Centre on the 29th July 2007.You can sponsor Sam and gang through ‘justgiving’ by clicking here.
